Society of Thoracic Surgeons Call for Requests
By David Vener, MD
Do you have a question?
The CCAS Database Committee is actively seeking queries to be posed to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery Database that involve anesthesia. Whether it’s a preliminary (minor) data request, looking for background information to formulate a more formal major request, or just a “What is the current landscape of care for problem x?”, we are here to help you formulate and submit your questions to the STS Access and Publications (A&P) Committee.
Minor data requests are not for publication or presentation but can be an excellent starting point to determine if the information is available and useful. Unlike major requests, these are typically handled in a more expedited manner and do not include any formal statistical analysis. Major requests are reviewed by the A&P Committee on a semi-annual basis and are reviewed and scored by the entire committee. Past publications concerning dexmedetomidine, type of airway (oral vs nasal intubation), and red cell transfusion in Congenital Heart Disease have all come from anesthesia-related investigators.
For more information about the process and how to get started please contact David Vener (firstname.lastname@example.org) and visit the STS website (https://www.sts.org/registries-research-center/sts-research-center/access-publications). Remember, “without data, you’re just another person with an opinion.”
